An online tuner is a great tool for tuning a guitar, bass or any stringed instrument. It works by using your device’s microphone to measure the sound of the vibrating strings and compare it to a reference frequency. It displays a graphic indication of when the string is in tune, and when it’s out of tune. This enables the musician to adjust their string until it produces a tone that matches the reference frequency.

There are a lot of different guitar tuner apps available, some that need to be downloaded and others that can be accessed via the web. We’ve chosen to focus on the latter here as they don’t require you to store another app on your phone. We’ve also chosen to look at only the ones that are free.

The first one that we’ve picked is CarlTune. It’s a pretty comprehensive online guitar tuner that allows you to tune up to 11 different instruments and has a number of learning features too. It’s a full chromatic tuner which means that it can detect any note from the chromatic scale and display it. A green indicator indicates that you are in tune, while red indicators show if you’re sharp or flat. The app is available for a variety of devices, including mobile and desktop computers.

Another good option for tuning an acoustic or electric guitar is Google Tuner. It’s a free, easy to use tool that works through your device’s microphone. It’s a very accurate tuner, showing you the exact pitch of your string and what note it’s playing. You can even change the sensitivity of the tuner so it’s less sensitive to noise and you can get it more in tune.

We love the fact that this online guitar tuner is also available as a smartphone app too. It has a simple interface that makes it really easy to use, especially for beginners. It has a large selection of alternate tunings too so it’s perfect for those who like to experiment with different sounds.

There is a small catch with this tuner though, as it only works on Chrome for Android and iPhone. So if you don’t have that browser installed or you prefer to use something else, it won’t be an option for you.

Fender’s online guitar tuner is pretty comprehensive and is really easy to use. The interface is straightforward and the app has loads of learning features too. There are chord diagrams, lessons that listen to you play and give you feedback, as well as a daily song feature that provides you with the chords of popular songs for you to practice with. There is also a separate chromatic tuner and loads of alternative tunings to choose from too, such as DADGAD, drop D and loads more. It’s definitely worth checking out.
